Gruyere Cheese Exports Collapse

Gruyere Cheese

In another sign of the times we live in it was announced in June that production of the famous Swiss cheese Gruyere will be cut by 10% over the next year. Exports have collapsed overall by 10% with a big drop off in sales especially seen in the US (down 25%) and Belgium (down 40%).

Gruyere Cheese

The drop in demand is being blamed on the slowing economic growth in Europe and the US. The cost-of-living crisis is hurting consumer demand and Gruyere is a premium priced cheese product due to its provenance of being a Swiss/French product. This disappointing news for Gruyere was further compounded by a court ruling in the US back in March which permits the use of the Gruyere name for other types of cheese sold in the US that is not Swiss/French origin. The ruling does state that any cheese using the Gruyere name does need to have small holes in it and the cheese needs to be at least 90 days old. However, the lack of geographic restriction is a further blow to Swiss/French producers.
