Japanese research suggests eating cheese slows down age related cognitive decline

A whitepaper published in July 2023, conducted by National Centre for Geriatrics and Gerontology in Obu, one again shows the healthsomeness of Cheese. The researchers in Japan, monitored the health and eating habits of more than 1,500 over-65s. The most commonly consumed cheese was processed cheese. The results showed that those who regularly ate cheese scored better in cognitive tests and may have a lower risk of dementia.

The team used a 30-point test, which included checks on orientation, attention, memory, language and spatiotemporal skills, to evaluate cognitive function. A score of 23 or less indicated poor cognitive function. On average, those who ate cheese scored 28 points, while those who didn’t had 27.

Cheese-eaters also had slightly lower BMI and blood pressure, a faster walking speed and more variety in their diet.

This is not the first study to draw this conclusion, in 2020 another study conducted by the University of Iowa drew a similar conclusion. The four-year study, involving 1,787 people, aged between 46-77, was conducted with participants in the UK. The findings showed cheese protected against age-related cognitive problems and red wine was related to improvements in cognitive function.
